One of the biggest misconceptions about hair extensions is that they don't require much maintenance. The truth is, how you care for your extensions has a significant impact on how well they hold up over time.
Whether you're wearing a sew-in or maintaining your extensions between installations, a consistent wash-day routine can help preserve their softness, movement, and overall appearance.
Here are my four essentials for maintaining your luxury hair extensions.
Your Four-Step Hair Care Routine
Cleanse. Hydrate. Style. Protect.

Cleanse: Remove the Buildup
Recommended: Paul Mitchell Shampoo Two
Over time, hair extensions accumulate residue from styling products, oils, serums, and everyday wear.
This buildup can cause your extensions to feel heavy, tangle more easily, appear dull, and lose their natural movement.
That's why I recommend using a clarifying shampoo when buildup becomes noticeable.
- Gently detangle your extensions before washing.
- Use a clarifying shampoo as needed to remove stubborn product buildup.
- Work the shampoo downward through the hair to minimize tangling.
- Rinse thoroughly to avoid leaving product residue behind.
- Follow with moisturizing products to restore softness and manageability.
Hydrate: Keep Your Hair Soft
Recommended: Joico HydraSplash Shampoo & Conditioner
After cleansing, it's time to bring softness and manageability back to your extensions.
Unlike the hair growing from your scalp, your extensions don't continuously receive your scalp's natural oils.
This makes regular conditioning an important part of your maintenance routine.
I recommend lightweight moisturizing products that help soften the hair without leaving a heavy coating.
- Use a lightweight hydrating shampoo.
- Apply conditioner mainly through the mid-lengths and ends.
- Gently detangle while the conditioner is in the hair.
- Rinse thoroughly to prevent unnecessary buildup.
- Avoid excessive conditioner directly on the wefts or installation foundation.
Your Natural Hair and Your Extensions Don't Always Need the Same Shampoo.
One mistake I see people make is using the exact same products on their extensions that they use on their natural hair.
While some products work beautifully for both, your natural hair and your extensions may have different needs.
For example, your natural hair may benefit from rich, moisturizing shampoos or products formulated with heavier oils and butters.
However, those same formulas can sometimes be too heavy for certain extensions, particularly silky or straighter textures.
Excessive product residue can weigh the extensions down, reduce movement, and make them harder to style.
My recommendation? Choose products based on the texture and condition of your extensions instead of assuming your natural hair routine will work for both.
The goal is to keep your extensions clean, soft, manageable, and flowing naturally.
Style: Beautiful Hair, Less Heat
Recommended: Flexi Rods
We all love beautiful curls and a polished finish, but you don't always have to reach for a curling iron.
Flexi rods are a great option for refreshing your curls and maintaining your hairstyle without repeatedly applying direct heat.
- Gently detangle before styling.
- Wrap sections of your extensions around the flexi rods.
- Allow the hair to set completely before removing them.
- Separate curls gently to achieve your desired finish.
- Use minimal styling products to avoid unnecessary buildup.
Protect: Beauty Sleep Matters
Recommended: Satin Bonnet or Satin Pillowcase
Your maintenance routine shouldn't end when you're finished styling.
Protecting your extensions at night helps reduce friction that can lead to tangling, frizz, and dryness.
A satin bonnet or pillowcase is a simple addition that can help preserve the appearance of your hair while you sleep.
- Wear a satin bonnet or sleep on a satin pillowcase.
- Detangle your extensions gently before bed.
- Avoid sleeping with tangled hair.
- Keep your nighttime styling routine simple.
- Never go to sleep with your natural hair or installation foundation still damp.
Your Extensions May Be Dry, But What About Your Natural Hair?
If there's one thing I want every sew-in client to understand, it's this:
Your natural hair and braids underneath your extensions need to be thoroughly dried after washing.
Just because your extensions feel dry doesn't mean your natural hair underneath is completely dry.
Moisture can remain trapped within your braid-down, underneath your wefts, and close to your scalp.
When hair remains damp for extended periods, it can contribute to unpleasant odors, scalp irritation, and an uncomfortable installation.
How to Dry Your Hair Under a Sew-In
- Gently squeeze excess water from your extensions using a towel. Avoid aggressively rubbing the hair.
- Carefully lift and separate sections of your extensions so air can reach the foundation underneath.
- Use a blow-dryer on a cool or low-to-moderate heat setting to dry your natural hair and braids.
- Work in sections, focusing on the roots and areas where moisture may become trapped.
- Make sure your scalp, braid-down, and extensions are thoroughly dry before styling or going to bed.
If you're having difficulty washing or properly drying your installation, I recommend booking professional maintenance rather than allowing moisture to remain trapped underneath.
